Across the border
Living temple squares, great stupas wrapped in prayer flags, and the Annapurna range mirrored in Phewa lake.
Nepal starts an hour from Siliguri. At the Kakarbhitta border you cross the Mechi river, and from Bhadrapur airport nearby a short flight takes you to Kathmandu — a valley of three royal cities, each with its own Durbar Square, and two of the greatest stupas in the Buddhist world.
From Kathmandu the classic route goes west to Pokhara, where Phewa lake reflects the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre, and south to Chitwan for rhinos in the grasslands. We plan Nepal trips on their own or as an extension of a Sikkim and Darjeeling holiday.

Boating on the lake, sunrise at Sarangkot, and the Annapurnas on the skyline.

When to go
March – May
Rhododendrons and warm days; haze can soften the mountain views.
June – September
Heavy rain and cloud; Chitwan is largely closed for safaris.
October – November
The best season: clear skies and the festivals of Dashain and Tihar.
December – February
Cold mornings, clear days and good mountain views.
By road to the Kakarbhitta border, about an hour from NJP or Bagdogra, then a short flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu.
Or fly to Kathmandu from Delhi, Kolkata and other Indian cities, and we take it from there.
Indian nationals need no visa for Nepal. Carry a valid passport or Voter ID card (EPIC); children should carry a passport or birth certificate. Indian vehicles need a customs permit, so we usually change vehicles at the border.
