Silk Route Tours & Travels

Our home district

South Sikkim, from our own front door

Namchi, Ravangla and the Temi tea slopes: the gentlest, greenest part of Sikkim, and the district our office has always called home.

Most visitors pass through South Sikkim on the way to Pelling and give it an afternoon. We think it deserves more. Namchi, the district town, has two of the most striking sights in the state — the great statue of Guru Padmasambhava on Samdruptse hill, and the Char Dham pilgrimage complex at Solophok — and Ravangla, an hour away, has the Buddha Park and its 130 ft statue.

Between them lies Temi, Sikkim’s only tea estate, terraced down a hillside with the snow peaks above it. Our office is in Lower Ghurpisey, Namchi. When we say we know these roads, these hotels and these viewpoints, this is the district we mean.

Green and wet; the lower roads are usually open even when the north is closed.

October – December

Autumn

Clear views to the snow peaks from Samdruptse and Ravangla.

Cool and clear in Namchi, cold at Ravangla. Quiet and good value.

Getting there

About 3½ hours from NJP or Bagdogra via Melli or Jorethang, and about 3 hours from Gangtok.

Permits & documents

No special permit is needed anywhere in South Sikkim for Indian nationals.

Local tips

  • Spend a night in Ravangla rather than driving through: the evening light on the Buddha Park and the morning view are the point.
  • Combine Temi with Samdruptse and Char Dham in one unhurried day; they are all close to each other.

Questions

South Sikkim: frequently asked

Is Namchi worth a night?

Yes, especially if you are travelling between Gangtok and Pelling. A night in Namchi or Ravangla breaks a long drive into two easy ones and gives you the statues and Temi without rushing.
