There is no bad month to be in Sikkim, but there are months when some of it is shut. The short answer: March to May for flowers, October to December for views. The long answer depends on where you want to go.
October to December: the clearest views
After the monsoon washes the air clean, autumn brings the sharpest mountain views of the year. Kanchenjunga is often clear all morning from Gangtok, Pelling, Darjeeling and Thambi. Nights are cold, and by December there is snow at Tsomgo, Lachung and Zuluk. This is our favourite season for first-time visitors.
March to May: flowers and the busy season
Spring is the most popular time. Rhododendrons bloom in the Yumthang valley and around Pelling from April, and the north is usually open with snow still on the high ground. It is also school-holiday season, so hotels in Gangtok and Lachung fill early — book ahead.
June to September: the monsoon
Heavy rain brings landslides on the Teesta road and frequent closures in the north. Gangtok, Namchi and Pelling stay open and green, but the mountains hide in cloud. If you travel now, keep a spare day in the plan; we often advise against North Sikkim in July and August.
January and February: winter
Snow turns Lachung and the Zuluk loops white and Tsomgo Lake freezes. It is beautiful and quiet, but high roads can close for days after heavy snowfall, and Gurudongmar and Zero Point are often shut. South Sikkim and Darjeeling stay comfortable and clear.
