How to Choose a Tour Operator in Sikkim: A Checklist

Search for the best tour operator in Sikkim and every result calls itself number one. Nobody can prove that, including us. What you can check is whether an operator is registered, local, and clear about what you are paying for. Here is the checklist we would use ourselves.

1. Is the operator registered with Sikkim Tourism?

Travel agents and tour operators in Sikkim are registered with the Tourism & Civil Aviation Department under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules. A registered operator can show you a registration number. Ours is 77/DoT&CAv/S/20/TA, issued in Namchi district in 2020.

2. Where is the office, really?

Plenty of “Gangtok” agencies are run from elsewhere and sell trips on to local operators. That is not always bad, but it adds a link to the chain when something goes wrong. Ask for the street address and who drives the vehicle. Our office is at Lower Ghurpisey, Namchi, South Sikkim.

3. Who arranges the permits?

Permits for North Sikkim, Tsomgo, Nathu La and Zuluk go through a registered operator. Ask what documents are needed and when; a good operator tells you before you travel, not at the checkpost.

4. Is the itinerary written down, day by day?

A quote should list every night’s stay, the meal plan, the vehicle type and whether it is reserved or shared, and what happens if a road closes. If it says only “6 days Sikkim”, ask for the detail.

5. What exactly does the price include?

  • Hotel category and room type, and whether rooms face the view.
  • The meal plan at each stop.
  • The vehicle: reserved or shared, point to point or at disposal.
  • Permit fees, entrance fees, Zero Point and Nathu La extensions.
  • Room heaters in winter, and taxes.

6. Are the claims checkable?

Be cautious of unverifiable numbers — “40,000 happy customers”, “the number one agency in Sikkim” — and of reviews that mention a different company. Prefer things you can check: a registration number, a GSTIN, a named owner and a phone number that answers.
